A Short Week 11 😞

Unfortunately our week was cut short this week 😞 but here is a little snap shot if we got up.

Creativity, teamwork and problem solving skills were on full show with lots of Kapla structures being created! Farms, arrows and towers. You name it we can build it!

Our new sound was th this week. Let me see those tongues!! 😛

In Maths we were learning about measure. We had a mysterious letter from a friendly giant giving us some length challenges…

We had a good discussion about different ways of measuring, what we use to measure and things we measure in real life.

We then used some non-standard units to carry out some measuring.

We then went outside and gathered 5 sticks or stones and put them in order from smallest to biggest/shortest to longest.

Electricity

On Monday we were learning about electricity safety and potential hazards in our home/school environment. We talked about how to stay safe whilst using electricity and carried out a spot the hazard activity. We used a great website http://www.switchedonkids.org.uk

On Tuesday we shared how we got on with ‘electricity free hour’ homework challenge. I really enjoyed listening to what the children got up to without electricity and their discussion about the good and bad things about it.

Round up of week 10

Senses

At the start of this week we finished off our learning about senses by talking about hearing. We went on a listening walk around the school and made notes in what we could hear.

We then listened to music from different genres and talked about how it made us feel. Some songs made us want to dance whilst others made us feel like sleeping!

Electricity

On Tuesday we started learning about electricity. We began by making a mind map of what we already know.

We then did a sorting activity and separated items that use and don’t use electricity.

Next week we will be looking at electricity safety and talking about our ‘electricity free hour’ homework challenge.

Numeracy

This week we continued to look at multiplication and making equal sets. The children really impressed me when having a go at repeated addition.

Writing

We have made super progress with our ‘Owl Babies’ text this week. The children have been showing excellent retelling skills using the actions they made up. We also created a whole class and individual story maps which will help us to imitate the story before going on to the innovation stage.

Yesterday we made a tool box of owl adjectives and then had a go at writing our own sentences to describe one of the baby owls. We were focussing on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our sentences.

We also had great fun making our own rice cake ‘owl babies’, and then enjoyed eating them of course! Contributing to our 5 a day! 😊🍌🍎🥕

Science

In relation to the focus on the importance of hand washing that has happening of late, we carried out an experiment to test the effect of using soap when washing our hands. We handled a piece of bread without washing our hands, then another piece after washing our hands with only water and finally a piece after using soap and water. Watch this space for the results….

Week 9!!

Wow! What a quick week! Here is a round up of what we have been up to!

Topic

We continued with our Human Body topic this week and have been learning about and exploring our 5 senses.

We had lots of fun on Monday afternoon carrying out some touch, smell and sight tests! The children worked in pairs or trios and recorded what they thought each item was.

Feely boxes…

Smell test….

Sight test…

On Tuesday we carried out a taste test. The children were asked to guess what each drink was by using their sight, smell and then taste! They were very surprised when the ‘orange juice’ didn’t smell quite like they thought it would and managed to identify it as water!

We also had a go at making some scented soup with different herbs and spices during soft start! 👃🏻🍵

Literacy

Our two new sounds this week were y and x.

This morning we enjoyed sharing our homework with each other.

We are going to be spending the next few weeks looking at the text ‘Owl Babies’. We started by listening to the story on Monday and then made up some actions to help us remember it. We have been having a go at retelling the story using our actions, puppets and story stones to help us.

We also had a go at sequencing the story by putting pictures in the correct order.

Numeracy

More practice at making equal groups this week, as well as recognising unequal amounts in a group or row.

We have also been working on our skip counting in 2s, some of the children challenged themselves and have been working hard to write the numbers too.

World book day

We had a great day celebrating World Book Day on Thursday! 😀📚

We started the day by sharing our favourite books and talking about the characters we were dressed up as.

We then decorated our potatoes! The children showed wonderful creativity for this task and I saw lots of determination to create their characters! Sticking things to a potato is not an easy task!

What do you think of the finished masterpieces?! I was very impressed!

In the afternoon we used our potato characters to create animations with our buddies. This was lots of fun!

What a fantastic day celebrating our love of books. 👍😀📚

Potato request!! 🥔🥔🥔

Next Thursday 5th March is World Book Day and we are going to be having a Literacy day focussing on stories and books. One of the activities we will be doing is decorating a potato as one of our favourite book characters! 🥔📚 If possible can the children please bring in a potato along with any materials to help them create their character. There will also be a selection of materials available in class for them to use if needed.

The children are invited to dress up as a book character if they wish and bring in a favourite book from home to share in class.

Thank you advance! 😀

Week 8 update 😊

What a wonderful week in P1 this week and I am delighted to see lots of the children making a big effort to follow our school values – Respect, Kindness, Safe, Inclusion, Determination and Teamwork! I even ran out of house tokens in the classroom!!

Numeracy

In Numeracy we have been focusing on making equal groups and recognizing an unequal amount. The children have mastered making equal groups with materials 😀👍

On Tuesday we were learning about measure, which helped us make some delicious pancakes!! 😋🥞 We talked about why we need the correct amount of each ingredient in a recipe and worked together to weigh, count and measure accurately.

In the afternoon we cooked our pancakes and enjoyed eating them with a variety of yummy toppings!

Literacy

This week we were consolidating the last group of sounds. The children were doing a great job of finding the sounds throughout the week. Today we had a sound hunt around the room.

Keep practising the sounds at home when you can using the sound single cards. The ai, oa, ie sounds are especially tricky to learn!

This was our last week of writing with using the Cecil the Spider text. We had a special visit from Mr Callandar yesterday who was super impressed with our story maps and enjoyed listening to us telling our own stories! 😊

We have also learnt two more tricky words, to and do. The children are doing well at learning these words and have been telling me that they’ve been practising at home. We will learn one more word next week and then have a consolidation week.

Topic

We have started our Human Body topic and this week were looking at how our bodies have changed since we were babies. We used our wonderful photos (thank you for sending these in) to sort into different age groups and then create a time line of us growing.

This led us on to talking about our different body parts. We named and located the main body parts and then worked in groups to create some life size people to show our learning.

Gym

Gym was very exciting this week as we were using the gymnastic wall bars. We had lots of fun climbing on these, developing our balance, strength, and coordination skills and building confidence! 😊💪

Another busy, fun and productive week in P1.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend. 😀

A short (busy) week…

Although it has been a short week this week we have still managed to get lots done!

We had a fantastic day outside on Thursday, working together with P1/2 and the ELCC to develop our outdoor space. We showed excellent teamwork and determination to get the job finished!

Some of us were helping to build a wood store which required lots of hammering!

We also built a ‘tyre mountain’ structure with a slide. First of all we had to work together to move the tyres into the garden and get them in position. Then we had to move lots and lots of bark which we used to fill the tyres.

This took us most of the morning but it was worth it! The finished structure is fantastic! We even finished in time to have a little play on it! 😃 Teamwork definitely makes the dream work!

In the afternoon we worked with our buddies to create some videos using a video App. This involved mixing different backgrounds, videos and sound files to create our own video clips. It was lots of fun and we can’t wait to continue to work on the videos next week. 🎬😃

Today we have been very busy bees!

We started off by learning our new sound ‘oo’. We listened to a story, learnt the song and had a go at writing some oo words on the smartboard.

We then practised the sound by doing a variety of activities. These included finding and highlighting oo words, writing oo words and making oo words using Cheerios and magnetic letters.

After learning our new sound we were did some story writing. We now know the ‘Cecil was a Spider’ text really well so we are having a go at changing the story by adding some of our own ideas. Today we were creating some story maps of our ideas and next week we will practise telling our stories.

This group of children made up a wonderful story about Skye the Horse who was eating lots of apples! They did a wonderful job of creating a story map before telling it to the rest of the class.

This afternoon we were doing some French. We were answering questions including what is your name and how are you? The children have made great progress and are becoming very confident at this. We then continued learning how to say different colours and had a go at singing the song ‘Sing a Rainbow’ in French. 🌈 We also learnt about the French festival Mardi Gras and made our own masks inspired by the carnival. Why not ask us what colour our masks are and see if we can answer in French?

Phew…. we finished just in time for the bell…..and all that in only 2 days! 😉

Have a great weekend everyone and see you on Monday. Don’t forget your baby photos! 😀
